Steeple Sessions

Vinnie and Steve Cooney play The Unitarian Church, St. Stephen’s Green, Dublin on Thursday the 1st of September @ 8pm

The Steeple Sessions present traditional Irish music concerts in its purest form and are geared towards those who seek the genuine, elusive musical traditions of Ireland. Held in the beautiful surroundings of a candle-lit church in Dublin, the line up of renowned musicians/performers changes nightly throughout the Summer, ensuring each concert is unique and fresh. Audiences will hear pin-drop unaccompanied sean-nos songs in the Irish language, alongside dance music and airs performed acoustically on traditional instruments.

The church was built and opened for public worship on Sunday 14 June 1863. Four years later Dublin's other Unitarian congregation at Eustace Street merged with St Stephen's Green to form one church. The top of the spire is 97 feet from the street, with the main body of the church being 58 feet long by 46 feet wide. The design brilliantly fulfills the requirement that in a non-conformist church the emphasis should be on the pulpit, unlike in established denominations where the focus is on the communion table or altar. Everyone in the St.Stephen's Green church can hear and see the preacher, emphasizing the importance of the spoken word to the Unitarian congregation.

A beautiful tale told through Music, Story and Visual Art.

The traditional tale of the blind Seal is told through visual arts, music and acting. As TG4's Darach O'Tuairisg reads the story, Grammy-winning musician Vinnie Kilduff (best known for his work with U2, The Waterboys and Clannad) creates an evocative soundtrack and artist Dara McGee rapidly paints a series of illustrative oil-paintings. When the story reaches its shocking climax, McGee arranges the four canvasses together to reveal a totally new picture. A really simple idea, wonderfully executed.

"They've been sporadically touring this brilliant show around arts festivals recently and will continue to do so in 2010. Catch it if you can". - Hot Press.

It Might Get Loud is a documentary by filmmaker Davis Guggenheim. It explores the history of the electric guitar, focusing on the careers and styles of Jimmy Page, The Edge, and Jack White. The Track Tomorrow by U2 is on the soundtrack of the Movie and features Vinnie playing Uilleann Pipes. This Track is used in the scene where The Edge describes the writing and the recording of the War album. The film received a wide release on August 14, 2009 in the U.S. by Sony Pictures Classics. It tackles the electric guitar's impression on the lives of three generations of musicians. The look is an intimate one, and a rare one especially in the case of Page, who has been famously guarded with the press.

The Edge and Vinnie

The film documents the varied playing and recording styles of guitarists Jimmy Page, The Edge, and Jack White. Dubbed as a documentary on the electric guitar from the point of view of three rock legends, "It Might Get Loud" was put together by an impressive team, among them the producer behind Dark Knight.

On this significant evening of music Vinnie joins Christy Moore, Mary Black and a host of Irish musicians to celebrate the Genius of one of Ireland's most influential & much loved musicians and poets, Steve Cooney.

Originally from Melbourne, Australia, it was 1981 that Steve bought a one-way ticket to Ireland. His intension was to re-trace the land; the music, and the language of his forefathers. He has lived in Ireland ever since.

For over thirty years, Steve has made a significant contribution to traditional Irish music, on hundreds of recordings, as well as performing with international artists including Chuck Berry, Mark Knopfler, David Gilmour and Sinead O Connor.

It was in the 90's, while living in the Gaeltacht of Dingle, west Kerry that Steve paired with singer and button accordionist Seamus Begley. Begley & Cooney became one of the most popular traditional acts of the 90's. Their incredible energetic performances excited a thriving traditional music scene, which to this day has rarely been matched. They both went on to win Ireland's prestigious National Entertainment award for Traditional Music

More recently Steve has just completed a Master of Literature in Education degree at UCD in Dublin. With his acclaimed thesis, Musical Notation and Theory in Early Learning: A Case for Intuitive Holistic Inter-Cultural Models, he has developed a ground-breaking approach to teaching music in primary schools.

For one night only, Steve brings together some of his many friends he has performed with over the years. With a band especially assembled for the occasion, we will hear the music and poetry of this remarkable man. Vinnie has worked with Steve since the early 19080s. They have produced many great works to-gether.

The lifeboats were moored at Killeany Bay. A small boat house was built at the side of the harbour. A new boathouse has now been constructed on this site.

The Lost Tapes of Inish Mor
While living on Inis Mor during the 1980's musician, songwriter and producer Vinnie Kilduff was so impressed by the local and visiting musicians and Sean Nos singers on the Island that he and Irene Keogh, the former manager of Windmill Lane Recording studios, held many recording sessions on the island in a bid to capture the music of these extrordinarly talanted performers.

What emerged was a well recorded wealth of music from a variety of excellent musicians, some of whom have since passed away.
Content in the knowledge that he had captured on tape some special and unique performances Vinnie put the tapes into safe storage until his busy schedule would allow him the time to bring this music to a wide audience.

Several suggestions were made as to how this music could be used when Vinnie had the idea to publish the recordings in a way that would keep the link with Inis Mor and in the process benefit the most important lifeline to the Aran Islands, The Lifeboat.
